THE HISTORY OF HANDBAGS
Can you believe that the first recorded handbag in history was none other than a ‘man bag’? That’s what the history books say.
Fourteenth century Egyptian hieroglyphics show men carrying crude pouches or pockets made from leaves, animal hide or cloth tied around their waists which they used to carry flint or coins. Several hundred years later and little leather pouches are still in fashion… but we’ve come a long way!
Although the man-bag was the start of handbag history – it was the females who really got fired up with fashion! As far back as the 14th and 15th centuries, the women started wearing pouches with more ornate designs whilst the men wore ordinary long pouches attached to a cord from their girdles which they used to carry practical stuff like food for their falcons and hunting equipment.
Like the status symbols they are today, the drawstring purses worn by medieval women were a clear demonstration of fashion, status and lifestyle. These purses were often studded with jewels or patterned with embroidery which revealed to onlookers if the wearer was betrothed to someone – plus the materials they were made from (eg silk etc) were indicators of the wearer’s means.
Over the next few centuries, handbag design took a back seat as the clothes that women wore became more voluminous. Bags literally ‘disappeared’ under the skirts. Personal hygiene was often a bit suspect, so many aristocrats would carry bags carrying sweet smelling herbs and spices or perfumed cotton balls to distract attention while peasants wore large satchels made from leather or cloth across their bodies.
As fashions slimmed down towards the end of the 17th century, handbags re-emerged and the fun really started!. Handbag design really changed during the Victorian era when there were major scientific and industrial developments, because a whole range of new materials and manufacturing processes were introduced. Embellishments and embroidery became more important as the handbag, called a ‘reticule’, became a fashion accessory and a status symbol.
The advent of railways and rail travel in the 1800s meant more women became mobile – and as they went on their travels carrying hand-held luggage – the name ‘handbag’ was coined. Many of today’s leading fashion handbag designers have their roots in the travel bags of old.
And there rest is …… well, history. In the early 1900s, larger handbags, briefcases and clutches without handles – called ‘pochettes’ – came to the fore, with the frugality of the war years (1940s) producing simple, practical shoulder bags with a military influence. Expensive materials such as leather and zips were scarce during war-time so designers turned to alternative ideas such as wood, plastic and synthetics. Not letting the war deter their style, British women even wore handbags that matched their outfits but that contained their all-important gas masks!.
The post war boom of the fifties saw the development of a whole range of new fabrics and materials which changed the way handbags were made – fake reptile skin, canvas, synthetics, plastic and rayon came to the fore in handbag design. Over the next decades, handbag design really took off – from dainty little bags that maximised the effect of the mini skirt, slouchy leather bags and fabric satchels that were influenced by the East, romantic bags for the sixties hippies and embellished evening bags. Handbag history also became studded with the big designer handbag names including Prada, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Chanel, Mulberry etc.
And as things change…the more they stay the same. With the man-bag firmly bag in style in the 21st century, the males of the 14th century have not been forgotten!. Handbags come in a staggering array of sizes, shapes, colours and materials and are indispensable for practical purposes and as a fashion accessory. Handbags have an interesting story to tell and will continue to evolve as social commentators, fashion indicators and individual style icons.
