Train holidays in Australia

The Indian Pacific is a great rail holiday for those who want to journey in an continuous straight line.

The Indian Pacific runs 4352kms from Sydney to Perth.

Moscow to London is about the same distance.

The rail journey travels in a straight line along the beautiful dry and deserted region of the Nullarbor Plain.

It symbolises not only the engineering skills of those who worked in severe weather conditions more than a century ago to put together the transcontinental link, but also the nature of Australia’s long-distance rail network.

The Indian Pacific travels across only three cities, two of them little more than sizeable mining towns, and on the Nullarbor Plain there is pretty much nothing to catch sight of, unless you’re fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of a wedge-tailed eagle or kangaroos.

But the large number of people each year who make the east-west journey, lasting three days and nights, aren’t looking for a progression of city skylines, suburban flatlands or green pastures..

Travellers have opted for this form of holidaying because they want to experience the great Aussie, where they view many hours of watching the rich red earth and beautiful blue sky.

And travellers can do it in air-conditioned comfort in addition to access to facilities and standards of service which compare with lots of the world’s higher-profile luxury railways.

The Indian Pacific has twin compartments with top and bottom sleeping berths and private shower and toilet.

There are club carriages for social gatherings and dining carriages offering restaurant-type meals with waiter service. Alcohol is is offered on the train at reasonable prices.
In Australia, one of the long distance train holidays is the Indian Pacific.

Another long distance train with comparable features is known as The Ghan and operated by Great Southern Railway which journeys from Adelaide to Darwin and vice versa. The trip takes two days and nights and its total distance is 2979kms.

Both rails operate twice a week in each direction, with daystops each en route for local touring.

Comparable Indian Pacific tickets are $2008 and $1362, with similar discounts and concessions.

Unlike European’s extensive rail system, Australia’s population spread has meant that trains are frequently used to commute travellers to Australia’s capital cities.

The Overland is a daytime service connecting Melbourne and Adelaide. XPT trains run from Sydney to Melbourne, Brisbane and regional centres around NSW. And Queensland has several tourist trains.

The Sunlander carries travellers to Brisbane and Cairns three times per week on a 32-hour trip and The Inlander runs between Townsville and the mining region of Mt Isa. The Kuranda Scenic Railway near Cairns takes tourists twice-daily on a 90-minute journey through 34kms of rainforest.
